Thailand Tour With Mom: Pattaya

My mother and I arrived in Pattaya on our double decker bus much later than I had anticipated. The original plan was to arrive in Pattaya before sunset and go to the night market after checking in to our hotel. However, you know what they say about the best laid plans. The bus dropped us off in the north part of Pattaya and our hotel was more in the southern part of Pattaya. Fortunately for us we were able to easily catch a reasonably priced taxi to our hotel, which was purple. Continue reading

Lucky Threes

Sports day is a big deal in Thailand. It’s almost like field day in elementary school. The whole school participates in sporting events like track and field, Regent’s sports day on December 15 was for the secondary school. I was stationed at the javelin throw, it was terrifying as students would come up to the javelin and say they had never done it before. My job was to mark the throw; it was a boring job that I needed to be alert for. I am not a land sports person. Continue reading

Staycation: Garden Cliff Resort and Spa

We had a three day weekend December 3-5 for the King’s birthday (also known as Father’s Day). At first, I decided to go to Koh Chang to enjoy the beach and island life. Unfortunately I had decided at such a last minute that the accommodation was way out of my price range and I was not feeling like spending time in a hostel. As the long weekend approached, I felt less and less like traveling but still feeling the need to get away. Using my fantastic Internet research skills, I discovered the Garden Cliff resort and spa in Pattaya.  Continue reading

Teddy Island

Every week, on my way through Pattaya on Beach Road to go diving, I pass the Teddy Bear museum. Outside the building is a huge statue of a teddy bear dressed up in a crown and cape advertising Teddy Island. It piqued my curiosity and every time I passed it I thought to myself, “I need to go there.” First, I did a little research and found that it was a unique place which only made me want to go more. Then, I had a day off from diving one weekend and finally went.  Continue reading

First Full Week

I have been back in Thailand for several weeks now, but have only recently completed my first full week of teaching. New students came in to school for an orientation on August 22, classes started August 23, but I did not start my lessons until the 25th. Plus, there was a week of orientation before all that, so I had a lot of down time. Getting back into the swing of things has been nice, but not without its interesting moments. Continue reading

Wading into Travels

My last day at school was March 18, and I officially moved out of my apartment March 22. My work visa expired March 31 so I decided to go traveling a bit before leaving the country. One thing I forgot to mention in the last blog post were my job interviews. Through my connections at the dive shop I was able to get a job interview for teaching swim lessons to primary students at an international school in Pattaya. The first interview went well and they asked me to go back so they could see me teach. When I went back to teach the pool was broken so I had to go back again. Continue reading

Late New Year Post

I had a 4-day weekend for New Year’s which was great. However, I did not want to spend it stuck in Ban Bung, I really needed to get away. My first plan was to go to Koh Chang, relax on the beach, frolic in the ocean, and do a little scuba. That plan fell through when the only accommodations I could find were about 200 USD a night. So I had to fall back to plan B: Pattaya and Kanchanaburi. Moral of the story is plan ahead. Continue reading

December!

I am grossly behind in my writing. I have been a little busy as of lately. However, here are the past several weeks…

Went to Koh Samet on Saturday (December 5), it was about 6 hours of travel. I did not have a reservation at a hostel; I planned to go from hostel to hostel trying to find a room. I figured since it was the King’s birthday, everyone would be heading to Bangkok. Wrong; there were people sleeping on the beach. On the ferry over, I met a very nice man who helped me find a place to stay for the weekend. A woman rented me a house (really a house: two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a living room). Continue reading

Sunburn City (Weekend in Pattaya)

Friday I had the giant chocolate brownie from the night market for breakfast. The breakfast of champions is chocolate cake, but a giant brownie comes as a close second. It was delicious. I moved the ant trap into the bathroom, so far no hits. There was a giant dead cockroach at the entrance to my apartment building; I was not pleased when I saw it. Giant chocolate brownies are delicious but I was still hungry. I stopped by the food cart with the meat on a stick that I have had before, but they were out! Therefore, I had to go to class still hungry. Continue reading
